GUIDANCE NOTES RE FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

Some weeks ago I wrote to you confirming that the 2001 NatWest Island Games would be going ahead as planned and would not be significantly affected by the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the United Kingdom. At that stage I promised to write to you nearer the Games to advise you regarding any special arrangements as part of the Foot and Mouth Disease prevention system.

While Foot and Mouth Disease remains widespread on the United Kingdom mainland, the Isle of Man has, so far remained free of the disease. This has largely been due to the disinfection procedures introduced at the ports and the co-operation of residents and the travelling public. With your help, we would like to remain a Foot and Mouth free island and ask that:

Prior to arrival on the Isle of Man :-

" Ensure that any competitors from agricultural holdings do not bring any clothing or footwear that has been worn on farm and only bring freshly laundered clothes.

" Ensure that ALL kit is clean and free from soil. (for example, football boots, spikes and trainers etc)

" Ensure that no meat or meat products are brought into the Isle of Man.

On Arrival :-

" Everyone will walk over a disinfection mat, these contain a weak citric acid solution and will not harm your footwear. ( Vehicles arriving by sea will also be subject to disinfection)

" Department of Agriculture officials will be on hand in the arrivals halls of the airport and sea terminals to answer questions and provide any additional information required.

During the Games :-

" Foot baths will be provided on coaches to the various venues. Everyone should dip both day wear shoes and playing footwear.

" Please dispose of any packed lunch / sandwich material in a sealed waste bin where animals and sea gulls cannot get access.

On a general note, all farmland and hill land is closed to the public as a preventative measure and you must not enter these areas or approach livestock. If competitors do have any spare time many footpaths and national glens are open and marked as such. Also all of the beaches are open.

Any questions or problems regarding the above contact Andrew Willoughby at the Department of Agriculture in the Isle of Man either before or during the games on +44 (0)7624 473805 or E-mail andrew.willoughby@daff.gov.im

This is important information which has been compiled with the assistance of the Isle of Man's Chief Veterinary Officer. Could you please ensure that you supply a copy of this letter to every person travelling as part of or with your team.

We look forward to welcoming you and your team to the Isle of Man and to the 2001 NatWest Island Games. We know that as fellow Islanders we can look forward to your fullest co-operation and thank you in anticipation for your help.
