Latest News (June 2000)
There's been quite a gap since our last update back in November! Now with only just over a year to go before the 2001 NatWest Island Games get under way things are beginning to move and fall into place quickly.
We are looking forward to the pre-Games 'inspection' visit of IIGA representatives next month. They hold their AGM here on Sunday July 16th. At the same time we will be welcoming the visit between July 15th and 18th of representatives from the competing islands. We hope to impress all our visitors both with our lovely island and the high standard of sporting facilities we have available for July 2001.
On Wednesday July 5th we will be launching our 'Countdown to the Games' clocks at various locations around the Island. The one at Ronaldsway Airport is due to be switched on by HRH Prince Charles who is visiting the Island that day to preside at the annual Tynwald ceremony. Coinciding with the launch will be the start of our drive to raise local awareness of the 2001 Games and to begin the process of recruiting an army of volunteers to assist in July 2001.
The 5th Games Newsletter has now been published and uploaded to this site.
I understand that the majority of islands have now sorted out their accommodation requirements for the Games. Those as yet unaccommodated will presumably make their arrangements during the forthcoming July visit.
All the sporting venues for the 15 different sports have now been agreed. Details and photographs of the venues will shortly be appearing in the individual sports' pages of our site and in the 6th Newsletter to be issued in July.
There has been one change in the composition of our Games Executive Committee - Brian Shooter takes over the Ceremonies Co-ordinator post from Harry Taverner.
a) 'The Ladies' Golf event will now be held at Castletown Golf Club (Wednesday July 11th and Friday July13th) and Peel Golf Club (Tuesday July 10th and Thursday July 12th). The Peel venue replaces that originally scheduled for Mount Murray. See updated details in the Golf section of the 15 Sports'.
