All the 14 sports selected for the 2001 Games (see The Sports) have appointed co-ordinators and have submitted their budgets for their sport. These budgets are now being examined by the Games Executive Committee and steps are as a result being taken to try to ensure that the facilities and equipment needed for the various events will be available.
Already significant progress has been made with the
completion of Phases 2(a) and 2(b) of our National Sports Centre in
Douglas. This has provided us with an 8 x 2.5m lane 25m pool complete with
spectator provision and an electronic timing system, together with a 44m x 37m
sports hall with 9.1m minimum height, a health and fitness suite on two levels,
and a cafeteria. Phase 1 had provided a synthetic running track and stadium,
7000m2 synthetic multi-sports playing surface and a cycle raceway, all fully
floodlit. Work is now in progress on the building of three additional 7000m2
synthetic grass multi-sports playing surfaces at secondary schools in the three
other main towns of Ramsey, Peel and Castletown. Together with many other
significant improvements we are confident that those who join us in 2001 will
find facilities hard to surpass. A full outline of our sporting facilities will
be found in our 'Information'
section.
