SPORTS SELECTED FOR 2001 When the Isle of Man launched its bid to stage the 2001 Games, one of the key elements of its proposals was to provide the sports which the competing islands want. The commitment was honoured over the winter of 1997/98 with a survey of all member islands and proposals were then submitted to the February meeting of the International Island Games Association. The I.I.G.A. Executive has now approved the proposals and the fourteen sports to be staged in 2001 will be:- CORE SPORTS

Games Director, Mike Ball, explained: "We have listened carefully to the Islands and put together a package that reflects their wishes." It is interesting that the 2001 program will involve 13 out of the 14 sports being staged in Gotland next year. Only the local Gotland sport of Ten-pin Bowling is missing and, instead, we are welcoming back Gymnastics. Within established sports new developments for 2001 will include off-road cycling events and ladies football; both of which were requested by islands.
