Basketball Pools Decided
As Island entries closed on the 31st January 2001 the next phase of
planning for this years games is initiated. The pools and group stages
for each of the games team sports have now been drawn.....Football,
Volleyball and Basketball.
With no control of the numbers of teams entered in a particular aport,
the Organising Committee is left with some difficult decisions to
make when it comes to scheduling the competitions. The Ladies Football
competition causes problems with 9 teams entered, with pools of 5
and 4, and we have a similar problem with the Men's Basketball competition.
At the close of entries, 10 Islands have entered a team in the men's
Basketball competition. These teams have now been split into 2 groups
with seeding based on the results in Gotland in 1999. The groups are
as follows :
Group 1
Group 2
Rhodes
Cayman Islands
Gotland
Gibraltar
Saaremaa
Jersey
Guernsey
Isle of Man
Isle of Wight
Ynys Mon

With each team playing once a day, the group stage will take 5 days,
Sunday - Thursday, leaving the Final and 3rd place play off for the
last day on Friday.
Women's Basketball
There are 7 islands entered in the Women's event and this competition
will be split into 2 groups. After the initial group games, the top
two teams will play off for the Gold and Silver medals and the 2nd
team in each group will play off for the bronze medal.
The seven teams entered in the Women's competition are as follows
:
Gotland, Guernsey, Jersey, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Cayman Islands
and Rhodes.
The scheduling for both men's and women's competitions will be presented
to the International Island Games Association at their next meeting
in Guernsey 28th February - 3rd March 2001. Following this meeting
the provisional plan for the whole of the games including times of
events / matches will be distributed to the member islands.
